While the whole world is looking at Windows 10 as a potential new operating system for their computers, Americans seem to like the idea of sticking with familiar products a little bit more, as recent stats show that many of them are still running Windows 7 on their PCs.

Data provided by StatCounter for the month of February 2015 reveals that 46.21 percent of the desktop computers in the United States were running Windows 7, despite Microsoft's efforts to push customers to Windows 8.1

What's even worse is that the second operating system in the charts is not a Windows flavor, but Mac OS X, which apparently powers 17.17 percent of the local computers.

Windows 8.1 is close with 16.63 percent, while Windows XP is still a popular choice with 9.13 percent.

And no, Americans do not use Internet Explorer, statistics show, although there are some who apparently decided to stick to Microsoft's built-in browser.

A total of 40.27 percent of the computer users in the United States already installed Google Chrome on their PCs, while Internet Explorer is only running on 31.5 percent of computers in the country. Mozilla Firefox is third in this chart with 16.47 percent.

Version-wise, Google Chrome 40 leads the top with 29.56 percent, while Internet Explorer 11 is the runner-up with 16.79 percent. Firefox 35 is third with a total of 16.79 percent.
