Word is that Microsoft is currently testing a smartwatch powered by Windows 8 and featuring a transparent aluminum case that would allow the device not only to be lighter, but also very durable.

As far as Microsoft’s founder Bill Gates is concerned, wearable computing is the next step for the whole industry, although he admits that seeing such devices in schools isn’t quite a good idea.

“Hmm, it will help you cheat I guess,” he joked when asked if wearable devices could arrive in schools at the some point.

“The word ‘wearable’...glasses that project onto eyes...things that monitor whether you are getting nervous during a test. I think wearable is a very cool thing, but I don't really couple it that much to education,” he added during the company’s Faculty Summit on Monday.

According to recent reports, Microsoft’s smartwatch has reached prototype phase and could be released as soon as 2014. The company is obviously keeping everything secret for the time being.
