Microsoft really wants smartphone buyers to give Windows Phone a try, and the company has turned to a pretty unusual campaign to make sure that its mobile OS has its own chance to succeed.

In Nigeria, the software giant is offering Windows Phone buyers the chance to win one of the 12 cars that are included in the so-called “Lumia Christmas” campaign, which runs from November 24 through December 31.

All you need to do is buy a Lumia phone and send an SMS containing the word LUMIA + your name + the IMEI to number 38680 and you’re automatically entered into the draw.

“This is our little way of rewarding our consumers, ensuring they close this year and begin the New Year on a high note,” Microsoft says, adding that Nigeria is playing a key role in its smartphone business.

As for the cars, the model that Microsoft is offering is the Ford Figo subcompact which was presented by Microsoft in September 2009 in India and which comes in three different engine configurations.

Specifically aimed at developing countries, the Figo is mostly a city car, and the 1.2-liter engine that comes on the entry-level version is living proof in this regard, as it offers city mileage of 26 mpg (9 l/100 km) and a maximum speed of 102 mph (164 km/h).
