Microsoft confirmed at yesterday's event that all devices currently running Windows Phone 8.1 will be allowed to upgrade to Windows 10 for Phones absolutely free of charge, and each and every smartphone currently powered by its mobile platform will support the upcoming release.

Basically, devices such as the low-end Lumia 520 but also the flagships Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 will be upgradeable to Windows 10 for Phones, which once again reiterates Microsoft's efforts to bring more users to its new operating system as soon as possible after its release.

This isn't the first time that we're hearing about this plan, but now it's officially confirmed, so the only thing that we still need to find out is when the new operating system is expected to launch.

Microsoft hasn't provided any such details, but since it calls it “Windows 10 for phones” the company might be planning to release it together with the PC version of the operating system.

People close to the matter said that Windows 10 should be here by the fall of 2015, with RTM likely to be reached in the upcoming summer.

Obviously, Windows 10 for Phones would be automatically delivered to devices running Windows Phone 8.1, but Microsoft has also promised lots of new phones running the revamped OS version to come soon after the debut of the updated platform.
