A new app clone has been approved by Microsoft for the Store

Winamp Media Player can already be installed on Windows 8, but only on the desktop side of the operating system, as Nullsoft, the company behind the app, hasn’t even announced plans for a Metro version.

Third-party developers around the world, however, are trying to capitalize on this with fake Winamp apps which are trying to trick people into believing that they are downloading the original program.

This is the case of Winamp Media Player Pro, an app that has, surprisingly, received Microsoft’s approval to be listed in the Store, even though it clearly fails to meet the essential quality standards.

For example, the app comes with a price of $8.99 (€7.50) and no trial version is available, while the two published screenshots reveal almost nothing about its features.

The description is full of typos and the developer is called “Winamp pvt.”

While it’s pretty hard to understand how Microsoft approves such listings for the Store, check twice before buying any app for Windows 8, just to make sure that you won’t pay a few bucks for some sort of clone.
