The much awaited progress on GIMP is now marked by the launch of the first release candidate for version 2.8 of the application. Compared to the preceding beta, version 2.7.5, the set of modifications is not large.

However, keep in mind that installing the latest revision will create a new folder (/.gimp-2.8) in the home directory and all the settings in GIMP 2.6 are automatically migrated there.

The current build relies on new versions of GEGL and “babl”. Notable is the initial support for GPU-side rendering and processing via OpenCL (i.e. hardware acceleration) in GEGL. Also relating to the image processing framework is the addition of a proprietary GimpOperationBrightnessContrast.

The development team dealt with plenty of fixes, among the most notable being the repairing of GFig rendering issues.
