Registry entry prevents browser from loading content

The stable channel for Google Chrome has received a minor update recently, to build 28.0.1500.72. This is available only for Windows as the developer addressed a specific issue affecting this platform alone.

The problem consists in Chrome’s failure to load web pages if CWDIllegalInDllSearch registry entry is turned on.

CWDIllegalInDllSearch entry is available in all Windows versions starting XP SP3 and its purpose is to allow users control over the DLL search path algorithm, which is required by the LoadLibrary and the LoadLibraryEx APIs when DLLs are loaded without providing a fully qualified path.

With this entry enabled, the result in Google Chrome would be a blank content area and the “progress” indicator would be displayed.
