IE continues to be the second browser in the US

Internet Explorer is still involved in a very fierce battle with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox for the supremacy of the browser world, and according to some new market share stats, Microsoft's in-house app is not doing bad at all.

StatCounter, a company which has always claimed that Google Chrome is the top browser in the world, now shows that, in the first two weeks of February, Internet Explorer actually increased its market share to a significant extent, so less than 10 percent is now between the two apps.

Chrome is still number one with a share of 40.35 percent in the US desktop market, while Internet Explorer is second with 31.17 percent. Firefox is third with a total of 16.45 percent.

What's more interesting is that, global-wise, Internet Explorer isn't doing so well and is actually fighting with Firefox to retain the second position in the charts. In other words, Americans still find Internet Explorer a good choice, despite the criticism that has been aimed at Microsoft's app in the last few years.

It's also worth noting that Microsoft is now working to bring a new browser in Windows 10, which could be called Spartan and could be offered alongside Internet Explorer at first to address compatibility issues.

Spartan will debut in preview form later this year for Windows Insiders, while the stable version should be part of Windows 10 in the fall of 2015.
