Ever wanted to install a larger-capacity SSD in your Pro 3?

Microsoft offers the Surface Pro 3 with a maximum storage capacity of 512 GB, so in case you need more storage than that, you basically have no other option than to use OneDrive.

At least, that’s what Microsoft is saying. But Mexico City-based Jorge Malagon didn’t agree with that, so what he did was to install a larger-capacity SSD in a Surface Pro 3 in the most unexpected way: he cut his tablet open and replaced the default SSD like a boss.

Basically, he used the schematics of the Surface Pro 3 to find the precise location of the SSD behind the metal body. As DigitalTrends writes, he cut through the metal body with a power drill, obviously with nerves of steel because the smallest wrong move could have destroyed the device, and then pulled out the old SSD.

When the new Samsung’s 840 EVO 1TB mSATA solid state drive was in place, he reattached the back cover and everything looks (almost) brand new. Or that’s what he says.

The best of all? He now has easy access to the SSD, so he’s waiting for a 2 TB drive to be launched to make another upgrade to his tablet.

In case you’re wondering how come he didn’t try to simply dissemble the Surface Pro 3 piece by piece and replace the SSD, uh, that’s a hard question. But this way he made everything look a lot cooler.
