Microsoft's in-house challenger still dominates the browser war

Tech giant Microsoft will soon release a brand new version of its in-house browser, but previous versions remain impressively popular these days.

Internet Explorer 8 is currently the top choice for users worldwide, Net Applications data reveals, as this particular version was installed on 22.99 percent of computers in May 2013.

IE9 comes second with a 15.39 percent market share, while the extremely old and unsafe IE6 has been left behind, as it's running on 6.03 percent of the Windows systems in the world.

Firefox 20 is third with 10.38 percent, while Google Chrome 26 comes next with 9.85 percent.

The good news is that Internet Explorer 10 is becoming more popular, so it's now fifth in Net Applications' rankings with a market share of 9.26 percent.

A new version of the browser is expected to be unveiled together with Windows 8.1 later this month, so expect the market share of Microsoft's own app to grow even bigger by year-end.
