Marcin Kleczynski, CEO of Malwarebytes, announced on Wednesday on the company’s forum that the first public beta has been released for the upcoming Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0.

The most visible change in the new revision is the redesigned user interface, which, apart from giving the product a more professional look, should provide easier access to key functions.

Anti-Rootkit module and Chameleon self-protection technology, both in beta for the past year, have been integrated into the product and can now be turned on or off with a click.

Improvements touch on native support for 64-bit systems, and with increased focus on the threat detection and elimination engine, that should do a much better job.

Another change regards the licensing of the software, as the company decided to drop the lifetime model and adopt a subscription-based one, $24.95 / €23.49 per year, valid for three PCs.

The reason for this is the increased user base that generates more costs with bandwidth, hosting, and infrastructure. Maintaining the standards of the application also requires continuous research and quality assurance, which also need more funding.

However, the CEO informs that all existing lifetime licenses for version 1.x of the product will be valid for the next major revision.
