Tami Reller, Microsoft’s vice president of marketing, talked about Windows 8.1 during Intel’s Developer Forum (IDF) 2013, explaining that the update is expected to perform much better than the core operating system.

Reller has admitted that the Start button is likely to make Windows 8.1 a much more appealing product, especially because users expected the modern OS to remain as user friendly as its predecessors.

"It gives the audience a chance for Windows 8 to be familiar again, whether it's the Start button, whether it's the ability to boot to desktop, whether it's the old apps view or just the ability to turn off Charms if you're in a keyboard type of environment," Reller said when talking about Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 is scheduled to be launched on October 18, but Windows 8 users will be allowed to download it for free from the Store one day earlier.

Developers, on the other hand, can already download Windows 8.1 right now from MSDN and TechNet, as Microsoft has published the official RTM ISOs on the web for testing purposes.
