Only a few phone models will get it, however

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 was launched earlier this year on new Microsoft devices, including Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL, but up until now, there was absolutely no information regarding any other models that could get it before Windows 10.

While it was initially believed that Microsoft would keep it an exclusive feature of new Lumia models, it turns out that some other devices will also get Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 at a later time.

WindowsCentral reports that both the Lumia 735 and the affordable flagship Lumia 830 will receive GDR2, but right now, it’s not yet known when exactly the new update will be released for these models.

As for other phones, Microsoft remains completely tight-lipped and avoids saying whether the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 could launch on more devices or not, but it’s pretty clear that customers do want it.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 comes with a number of improvements for supported devices, including support for Bluetooth keyboards, options to pin individual settings to the Start screen, a redesign of the settings menu, and other small enhancements here and there that would keep devices updated until Windows 10 arrives.

And speaking of Windows 10, a new technical preview build of this OS is scheduled to be released on Friday at 10 AM PT, but owners of some devices, including Lumia 930 and the Icon, would have to wait a little bit longer to get it due to bugs that hold back the release on their models.
