Microsoft’s money-making machine is about to bite the dust, as the company could soon report the first quarterly loss in 20 years.

CBS News claims that Microsoft earned around $5.3 billion (€4.1 billion) this last quarter, but it’s also losing a lot of money, as it still invests heavily into its Internet division.

At the same time, the company has apparently lost around $6.2 billion (€4.8 billion) because it struggles to compete online with the likes of Google.

The recent Windows 8 launch doesn’t help either, as sales of the new operating system are apparently weak and won’t take off until mid-2013.

Official sales figures for the new Microsoft software are yet to be disclosed, but analysts are pointing out that Windows 8 is yet to become a truly successful product.
