People close to the matter have indicated that Microsoft is working on a smaller Surface tablet that could launch by year end, but it turns out that the company has delayed the debut until spring 2014.

Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley is reporting that Microsoft’s Surface Mini is supposed to come with Windows 8.1, so the tech giant is planning to make the Spring 2014 GDR update I’ve told you about earlier available from the get-go.

As a result, Microsoft might be pushing the launch of Surface Mini to early 2014 and could be released at a time when the company is also expected to finalize work on an LTE SKU.

According to previous reports, the Surface Mini is expected to feature a 7.5-inch display and come with a Qualcomm processor that would enhance battery life and performance. The device will be specifically designed to compete with the iPad mini and the Nexus 7.
