Microsoft is reportedly working on the second-generation Surface tablet, with sources familiar with the matter hinting that the company planned to unveil the device on June 26 at BUILD.

That didn't happen and Microsoft only unveiled the new Windows 8.1 Preview, along with some other major changes for its products, so the new Surface unit remains an enigma for all of us.

Word is that the revamped tablet family will include an 8-inch unit that would run Windows 8.1 Preview and would come at a much more affordable price, as the company is hoping to sell many more devices by the end of the year.

Even though Microsoft has apparently delayed the launch of Surface 2.0, expect the tablet to make its first public appearance by the holiday season when Windows 8.1 is also projected to hit RTM.
