Lumia 930 is Microsoft’s 5-inch flagship device that comes with really impressive hardware, including a quad-core 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and a 5-inch AMOLED display, but thanks to its high-quality microphones, it can easily become more than just a simple phone.

At least, this is what the software giant says in a video showcasing the 3D sound capabilities of the Lumia 930, explaining that, thanks to the omni-directional microphones, two on the front and two on the back, the device has absolutely no problem to deal with what is being called binaural direction.

As Microsoft explains, binaural recording makes it possible to handle interaural differences, which actually represent the different between the volume of the sound coming from each side of the phone. The Lumia 930 can thus accurately process surrounding sound and reproduce it without any differences no matter how far the device actually is from either source.

In order to demonstrate these capabilities of the Lumia 930, Microsoft turned to a video recorded with Scottish pop band Pride that makes full use of the omni-directional microphones and its binaural direction capabilities.

Obviously, there’s no doubt that the Lumia 930 is quite an advanced phone when it comes to hardware and some pretty top-notch technologies, but Microsoft still needs to fix simpler things before going so far with premium features.

For instance, it’s a well-known fact that the Lumia 930 becomes a hot potato under heavy usage, not to mention that battery drain continues to be one of the biggest annoyances for the majority of owners.
