Microsoft will soon rename SkyDrive, its own cloud-based storage service, to OneDrive, in a move supposed to address a trademark dispute in the United Kingdom.

While the company hasn’t provided a deadline for this transition, Microsoft recently started sending out emails to users to inform that SkyDrive would soon be renamed to OneDrive. In addition, it appears that the company has started generating 1drv.ms short links, making it easier to share documents stored in the cloud.

According to Neowin, the transition to this URL shortening service has already been made, so all users should see the new links when trying to share documents.

As for OneDrive itself, the rebranded cloud service is also expected to be available in Windows 8.1 Update 1 in the form of a pre-installed Metro app, as recent leaks have demonstrated that the cloud service would be part of the upcoming release.
