The company no longer places a desktop tile on Windows RT devices

Microsoft has decided to go all in on the Modern UI of Windows RT devices by removing the desktop tile placed on the Start screen on new tablets running this particular operating system.

From now on, all devices powered by Windows RT 8.1 will no longer come with a desktop tile, so users are directly provided with the Start screen and thus more or less locked in the Modern UI.

While there still are some ways to access the desktop without a dedicated tile, it’s pretty clear that beginners might have a hard time doing it.

One of the problems with this decision is that Microsoft is yet to launch a Modern version of the Office productivity suite, and since the app is offered free of charge to Windows RT buyers, the desktop is the only way to launch it.
