Microsoft has launched a Modern version of Skype soon after the debut of the Windows 8 operating system in October 2012, but the company has implemented several significant changes in Windows 8.1.

Basically, Redmond has discontinued the built-in Messaging app and made Skype the default chat app for its Modern operating system, thus pre-installing the application on all copies of the OS.

Skype is now available on basically every single version of Windows 8.1, including the RT build that’s powering several tablets, including Microsoft’s new Surface 2.

In addition, the application is also available as a separate download for both Windows 8 and 8.1 users and offers support for Microsoft accounts, making it easier for users to log in and chat with friends using the same credentials as for their emails or SkyDrive accounts.
