Microsoft Office has become quite an important product for the software giant, so in addition to lots of Office 365 improvements and the launch of Office Online, the company is also hard at work to prepare the next full version of the productivity suite for Windows clients and servers.

Office 16, which is said to be the name of the next version of Office on Windows, could arrive by the end of the year, Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet reports, citing people familiar with the matter and a number of hints that Microsoft offered in the last few days.

“We will continue with our on-premises releases of both SharePoint Server and Exchange Server on our traditional 2-3 year release cadence,” Office Corporate Vice President Jeffrey Teper said recently, pointing out that a new Office version could arrive as soon as this year.

Of course, Microsoft has refused to comment on this report, but in case these rumors are true, expect a public beta to be unveiled in the next few months.
