The Excel spreadsheet tool allegedly uses two patents without authorization

Microsoft is once again sent to court, this time for allegedly using some Excel patents without authorization.

According to a report published by the Minneapolis – St. Paul Business Journal, Minnesota-based software company MasterMine Software has filed a lawsuit against tech giant Microsoft, seeking financial compensation for violating a specific number of patents.

It seems that Microsoft Excel, Dynamics CRM and other Office solutions are using some MasterMine’s patents without authorization, so the Windows maker might now have to pay compensation for the years it sold the productivity software.

“We very clearly preceded Microsoft. Microsoft didn't even have a product on the [customer relationship management] market until five years after we were out with our product,” Rob Machalek, president of MasterMine, was quoted as saying.

Microsoft is yet to issue a public comment on the lawsuit, but more information would most likely surface in the next couple of months.
