Microsoft has announced a deal to take over Nokia’s mobile phone business earlier this year, but Redmond only now asked the European Commission to give its approval for the acquisition.

According to a report published by Reuters, the software giant, which wants to use the Nokia acquisition in order to support its efforts in the mobile industry, has contacted the EU antitrust regulators to give the go-ahead for the $7.49 billion (€5.44 billion) deal.

While no official statements have been provided, the same report mentions that the European Commission wants to look into the acquisition and make a decision by December 4, but the deadline could be extended by 10 working days.

As part of the deal, Stephen Elop, former Nokia boss, is also joining Microsoft, with people close to the matter hinting that he could be appointed the next CEO when Steve Ballmer retires.
