May 20 is very likely to witness the debut of the new Surface Mini tablet, but it appears that Microsoft has actually prepared many more goodies for those attending the press event in New York.

A report published by CNET today and citing people familiar with the matter reveal that Microsoft might actually use the May 20 press conference to take the wraps off the Qualcomm-based Surface Mini, but also off a new Surface tablet powered by a Haswell chip.

While the collaboration between Microsoft and Intel could thus go on with this new project, it appears that the new Surface could come in the original size and not tackle the small tablet market like the Surface Mini.

The Haswell-based Surface would be specifically optimized for power consumption in order to offer greater autonomy to the device and thus give a significant advantage to Microsoft's own tablet against the iPad.

Nothing has been confirmed until now, so we should take everything with a pinch of salt until Microsoft unveils the new devices at the May 20 event.

Keep in mind, however, that the upcoming product release would basically break Microsoft and Nvidia apart, as previous models have all used Tegra chips for longer battery life and better performance. Qualcomm-powered units, on the other hand, are entirely new, so it remains to be seen if Microsoft is making some other changes to the Surface lineup or not.
