Microsoft still struggles to move users from older operating systems to Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, but it turns out that people love Windows 7 so much that Redmond’s mission is nearly impossible.

Statistics provided by market researcher StatCounter indicate that more than half of desktop computers in Europe are running Windows 7 right now, which is quite surprising given the fact that Microsoft has spent a fortune for Windows 8 and 8.1 marketing.

Windows 7 currently has a market share of 50.98 percent in Europe, while Windows XP is the runner-up, but way behind, with 17.85 percent. Mac OS X is third with 7.43 percent, followed by Windows 8 with 7.23 percent.

Mainstream support for Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 will end on January 13, 2015, while extended support will continue to be offered until January 14, 2020. This means that Windows 7 users still have a lot of time to choose their next OS, so Windows 8 and 8.1 could still suffer from moderate adoption.
