Microsoft says that it’s now looking into the matter

Microsoft last week rolled out Outlook.com support for IMAP, announcing that users can now connect to the email service with clients that do not work with Exchange ActiveSync, including Mac Mail and Thunderbird on Mac.

While the release was clearly good news for many users, it turns out that lots of people are already experiencing issues with the IMAP support, as synchronization doesn’t work as it was supposed to.

“There are still bugs to be worked out. Mail on the Mac creates in own ‘Sent Messages’ and ‘Deleted Messages’ mailboxes on the server and that causes some sync problems.

“The Server appears to try to sync between its own ‘Sent’ and ‘Deleted’ mailboxes and the Mac Mail created ‘Sent Messages’ and ‘Deleted Messages’ mailboxes but that just starts to result in duplication of messages that don’t delete properly/completely,” one user explained in a comment to Microsoft’s announcement.

Ben Poon, Outlook.com program manager, confirmed that there were still a few bugs to be addressed in the service, while also confirming that some new options to make the IMAP support more reliable are on the table right now.
