A new version of Skype is up for grabs for Windows users

Skype for desktop will soon be the only version of the VoIP client available for Windows users, as Microsoft is working to kill the Modern flavor that was designed for touch-capable devices, so every single update is becoming more important for everyone running Redmond’s operating system.

Skype 7.6 has been released for download today, and Microsoft has apparently forgotten to provide a changelog, so it’s natural to assume that this new version comes with bug fixes and performance improvements specifically aimed at Windows users.

The desktop version of Skype is also optimized for the touch and can be used on tablets as well, so this new release could also bring improvements that would make the app run more smoothly on devices with a touch screen.

Skype for Windows desktop works on the majority of Windows versions currently on the market, including the ancient Windows XP, which no longer receives updates and security patches since April 2014. Obviously, everyone is recommended to update as soon as possible even though no changelog is yet available, but as usual, new versions are supposed to bring only improvements.

So Windows users should wait no longer and go download Skype as soon as possible. We’ve reached out to Microsoft to find out what’s new in this build and will update the article when we get an answer.

Update: it turns out that the new version of Skype brings some new emoticons, in addition to bug fixes and performance improvements.
