Microsoft has just announced that its revolutionary Skype Translate Preview app, which allows you to talk with someone speaking a foreign language and get an automatic translation of what they’re saying, now supports German and French too.

Previously demonstrated by CEO Satya Nadella in May 2014, Skype Translate is already available for Windows 8.1 users with the help of a dedicated Modern app, but the same capabilities will be soon introduced in the desktop version of Skype too.

At this point, Skype supports a total of six different spoken languages, namely English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, and Spanish, as well as 50 instant messaging languages that allow you to chat with someone and get the written translation of their message.

Skype is going through a major transformation these days, as Microsoft is rethinking its strategy and discontinuing the modern version of the application in favor of the desktop app, which continues to provide not only the richest feature package for use with a mouse and keyboard but also touch capabilities for tablets and smartphones.

Skype for Windows desktop will remain the pioneer of the Skype lineup and will include the best the company has to offer at any time, including the live translation features that are currently available in a dedicated app running on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
