The number of apps in the store dropped last week

It's a well-known fact that Microsoft has an app problem on Windows 8, but this isn't necessarily related to the number of items that are actually available for download.

In fact, Redmond is struggling to offer users-higher quality apps, as many of the programs that land in the store are junkware that in some cases attempts to trick people into paying a few dollars for basically nothing.

Microsoft is well aware of this problem and promised in 2014 to take care of this by blocking apps that do not meet its quality standards. That never happened, unfortunately, so a new spring cleaning was necessary to keep the store junkware-free.

As you can see in this graph provided by third-party store tracking service MetroStore Scanner, the number of apps available in the Windows Store dropped from 204,000 to 196,000 in just a few days, which is nothing more than living proof that the company is indeed addressing the app quality issue.

Obviously, the software giant did everything quietly, so there's no official statement regarding the name or the number of apps that were removed from the store.

Hopefully, the company will pay a little bit more attention to all items that get the green light to be published in the Windows Store in the coming months, so such a spring cleaning would no longer be required.
