Stardock has announced that a fresh beta for Start8, its version of the start button designed initially for Windows 8, is about to emerge. Compatibility with the latter is the first entry on the list of changes, but improvements, new features and fixes are also available.

The developer has replaced the default start button icon with a new image, and the Windows logo is no longer present as the default choice.

Also new are features under the Control panel, for displaying either the Windows logo or the Start8 menu depending on the desktop mode selected by the user (tablet or otherwise).

Users can rely on the theme editing tool Start8ThemeEdit.exe present in the installation folder in order to create new skins for the program.

Furthermore, the developer promises new options for maintaining the visibility of the taskbar and defaulting to the Application view.

At the moment, there is no installer available for the beta either standalone or through Startdock Central.
