Android continues to be the top mobile platform in the world

Microsoft is getting ready to debut the new Windows 10 for phones preview, but in the meantime, Windows Phone slowly loses its users, while its top rivals Android and iOS continue to lead share charts in several key markets.

StatCounter data for the month of January indicates that Windows Phone was only powering 2.26 percent of the smartphones in the entire world, which is way behind Android, which is still number one with a share of 59.78 percent.

As far as iOS is concerned, Apple’s mobile platform is the runner-up with 22.75 percent, stats show, so Microsoft clearly has a lot of work to do if it wants to get closer to its main rivals.

That’s why Windows 10 is such an important project and Microsoft hopes that by bringing its platforms closer together it could do that in a much more effective way.

Windows 10 for phones preview should debut anytime soon as part of a new insider program, but the full version of the operating system won’t be here before the fall of 2015, when all the other Windows 10 versions are expected to see daylight.

Windows 10 for phones will work on all devices currently running Windows Phone 8 and will be available free of charge for all users. Low-end WP models, however, will lack some features because of their limited hardware capabilities.
