We’re only three days away from the moment we’ve been waiting for months, as Windows 8 will officially go on sale on Friday all over the world.

The new operating system plays an “absolutely critical” role for Microsoft’s future, Bill Gates said in an interview, as it’s the company’s first Windows that has very high expectations from non-desktop markets.

Windows 8 will also step into the tablet segment in the form of Windows RT, but it’ll also reach mobile phones, with Microsoft scheduled to unveil the Windows 8 Phone on October 29.

Windows 8 remains one of the most criticized projects in Microsoft’s product family, especially because it dumps traditional Windows elements in the favor of the brand new Start Screen.

The operating system will however go live on Friday and many believe that it’ll follow the same path as its predecessors. In other words, it’ll be damn successful.
