Microsoft's Surface tablet is far from becoming a leading device when it comes to sales, but the tech giant is already getting ready to introduce the second generation.

Surface's lead designer, Ralf Groene, talked about the way the Microsoft tablet came to be an interview with design blog Core77, admitting that the first concept was pretty much a cardboard full of duct tape.

"When we first came across the idea of Surface, we made it from cardboard and duct tape. Prototyping is such a powerful tool, and the faster and the crappier the thing looks, the better," he explained.

As far as future Surface tablets are concerned, Microsoft is believed to be working on a mini device equipped with an 8-inch display and running Windows 8.1. No official details have been provided, but the public unveiling is rumored to take place at BUILD later this month.
