Plenty of people are still using the 11-year-old browser, statistics show

While Microsoft struggles to convince everyone that Internet Explorer 10 is the fastest, the most stable and secure browser on the market, Internet Explorer 8.0 remains the top app in this particular software category, as it’s currently installed on more than 20 percent of all computers worldwide.

Statistics provided by Net Applications for the month of March 2013 confirm not only that IE8 and IE9 continue to rule the market, but also the fact that Internet Explorer 6.0, an 11-year-old application, remains shockingly popular.

No less than 6.21 percent of computer users worldwide were running IE6 last month and, even though this market share signals a slow decline, Microsoft’s old browser continues to be the fifth most popular choice.

IE6 started this year with a market share of 6.69 percent, while February brought a minor drop, to 6.3 percent.

Truth is, the browser is slowly losing users but, given the fact that so many people have expressed their intention to stick to Windows XP after the April 8, 2014 retirement, IE6 is very likely to remain a very popular and unsecure solution.
