The company needs to focus on its own business, he says

Microsoft yesterday quietly rolled out a new campaign, promising to offer at least $200 (€150) to users who trade in their old iPads for a new device built by the Redmond-based tech giant.

While this is indeed an attempt to kill two birds with one stone (push more rival devices from the market and boost the number of your own units), analysts don't expect many users to exchange their iPads for Surfaces.

"Do I think that many people will take [Microsoft] up on this offer? In a word, no," Gartner mobile device analyst Van Baker was quoted as saying by Standard Digital.

"The app ecosystem is the problem for Microsoft and this offer doesn't fix that problem."

While the number of apps available in the Store is indeed a problem, more large companies are now developing Windows 8 ports of the programs, including social networking service Facebook.

The official Facebook app is expected to launch next month together with Windows 8.1.
