It looks like VLC entered the straight line towards a new stable build as the developer uploaded to their servers today the first release candidate for version 2.0.1.

The current revision (available for Windows, Mac and Linux) follows three pre-releases and is supposed to bring the user a much better experience with improved functionality and stability. However, there aren’t any details available just yet.

During its development, each major stable release of VLC media player received a codename. At the beginning, they were based on characters from the movie Goldeneye (Onatopp, Ourumov, Natalya, Trevelyan, Bond, Goldeneye, etc.).

Starting version 1.1.x, the developer chose the codenames from Terry Prachett’s Discworld. The moniker for build 1.1.x was The Luggage, while for the current major build (2.0.x) it is Twoflower.

For the upcoming stable release (2.1.x), the codename chosen is Rincewind and the one following (2.2.x) will be named WeatherWax.
