A dedicated version of VLC for Windows 8 with Metro UI is currently in the works, with some preview versions expected to be released by March.

The developers behind this project have just confirmed that a beta was very likely to be released “soon” for those who donated as part of the VLC for Windows 8 Kickstarter campaign, while the final build is likely to see daylight at a later time.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, a member of the developing team, said in a post on his blog that porting the app to Windows RT was taking a lot of time, but the project was seeing real progress.

“We have done some of the work, but we still have a huge amount of work to do, notably on threads and Winsock reimplementation,” he said.

Full information on the current status of VLC for Windows 8 is available here, including some very techy details on the porting job.
