Microsoft has a little Easter Egg in Windows 10

In addition to the features we can all see and use in Windows 10, the Technical Preview also comes with several hidden gems, some of which are there for testing purposes and supposed to help Microsoft determine whether they should be released to everyone or not.

One of the Easter Eggs that some might have come across in Windows 10 is a chess knight icon that shows up on the lock screen before you try to log into your computer.

Even though the icon has been around for a while, Microsoft has remained tight-lipped about its purpose, but in a statement today, the company explains what it is actually all about.

The chess knight icon, Redmond says, is an elements that would help Microsoft figure out how many people use the new lock screen that's part of Windows 10.

This way, whenever someone makes a screenshot of the new lock screen, Microsoft knows that it uses the new design just by looking for the knight icon. This would obviously be helpful for search engines, which could be tweaked to help the company find only photos that come with this icon.

The new design of the lock screen was available in build 9926, but it wasn't available by default and could be enabled with a registry tweak. The chess knight will go away in future builds, Microsoft says, as soon as the new lock screen design is finalized.
