Third-party concept looks better than the real deal

In Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926, Microsoft implemented a new Start menu that can expand to a Start screen and thus play two different roles that can be switched whenever the user wants to.

With a single click, the Start menu becomes a Start screen and the other way around, but it's not this behavior that users want to be significantly improved in future OS builds.

The look of both the Start menu and the Start screen needs to be overhauled, users think, and one designer has a pretty good idea about what these two features should look like.

Russian designer Ilya Kalinin, whose work we already highlighted in a post in late January, has created new mockups of the Windows 10 Start screen and Start menu that envision some of the changes that Microsoft could implement in the coming months.

As you can see for yourselves, both features look a lot better than the current versions, mostly thanks to transparency and other visual effects, but the Start menu also has a much simpler design that's expected to appeal to all Windows 7 fans who hope for a minimal approach.

Microsoft itself has also promised to improve the Start menu and the Start screen in future builds and transparency is one of the features that will be part of the new release. It remains to be seen if the company can indeed make its OS look just as good as these concepts.
