Microsoft says it plans to make this possible in Windows 10

Windows 10 for phones preview is expected to be downloaded by millions of Windows Phone users when it becomes available on more devices, so Microsoft is already considering an option that would become critical for all insiders: make updates to RTM possible.

Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, confirmed in a tweet that “this is our intent,” pointing out that such a feature could be implemented at some point in the future.

This isn't surprising though, as Microsoft is adopting a similar strategy for PCs as well, where it wants Windows Insiders to be able to update to RTM easily, without the need for a clean install.

In fact, Microsoft is working to make the direct updates easier in all current Windows versions, especially because users will be allowed to update to Windows 10 free of charge within the first year after launch.

Both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users will be offered Windows 10 at absolutely no cost in the first 12 months after its debut, and the update will be performed through the built-in Windows Update.

Needless to say, this is quite a critical feature for everyone, especially because it would require almost no user input and everything would be performed quickly on all devices. Not to mention that it also reduces the risk of errors or other issues that could interrupt the installation process and thus require further assistance.
