Microsoft's Terry Myerson has just announced that Windows 10 will be completely free for devices running Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 in the first year after launch.

Basically, users will have 12 months after the launch of Windows 10 to upgrade to this new release if their computers and tablets are powered by Windows 8.1 or Windows 7.

This way, Myerson said, everyone could upgrade to the modern OS without paying a single cent and thus benefit from all the improvements that are included in it.

“Windows 10 changes the rules of the game and redefines the relationship between us and our customers,” Myerson added.

Microsoft's executive also reiterated how important user feedback was for the company, pointing out that “it's our Windows” and “we are co-creating the future of Windows.”

“Your feedback is really helping to shape the future of Windows,” he pointed out, adding that “everything we do puts the customer in control, because you're our customer, not our product.”

Microsoft hasn't provided any details on how it plans to price Windows 10 after the one year of free upgrades, but more details will most likely be provided at a later time, as part of another event.
