Microsoft should improve the desktop, he explained

Windows 8.1 is just around the corner, so Microsoft is getting ready to roll out major improvements for an operating system that has often been described as confusing and unproductive.

Wes Miller, an analyst with independent research firm Directions on Microsoft, said in an interview for The Seattle Times that Microsoft should focus especially on the desktop, especially because developers are still finding Windows 7 a much more appealing operating system when it comes to coding.

“It’s been harder than developers would like or should be if you want the ecosystem to develop exponentially,” he was quoted as saying. “It’s one skill set to write for Windows 7. It’s a different one to write for Windows 8 and Windows RT.”

As far as the desktop is concerned, Microsoft will indeed bring several improvements, including a Start button to make the operating system a bit more familiar. The main difference, however, is that the button won’t launch a Start Menu, but it will instead get users to the Start screen.
