Windows 7 continues to be the leading OS worldwide, but according to some new figures provided by Net Applications, its market share is continuously growing, as more users are finally making the move from the old Windows XP.

Microsoft will officially discontinue Windows XP on April 8, so users still running this particular platform are strongly recommended to upgrade to a newer OS build as soon as possible, be it Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

Windows 7, on the other hand, seems to be the big winner of this transition, with March 2014 figures showing that it’s now powering 48.77 percent of the desktop computers worldwide, up from 47.31 percent the month before.

Of course, it’s not surprise that Windows 7 benefits from Windows XP’s retirement, as it still remains the number one destination for that majority of users who consider Microsoft’s modern operating system, be it Windows 8 or 8.1, rather unfamiliar due to the removal of the Start menu and the addition of the Metro interface.

Yet, Microsoft hopes to bring more users on Windows 8.1 and currently advertises this particular OS version as the main destination for Windows XP users, putting the emphasis on security and performance with every single occasion.
