Microsoft has compiled yet another version of Windows 8.1

Word is that Microsoft has already signed off Windows 8.1, but new evidence now shows that the company recently compiled build 9600, which could be an indication that the RTM version is indeed on its way.

A leaked WinJS file shows that Windows 8.1 build 9600 has been compiled on August 21, 2013, two days before the moment when the company was supposed to complete development of the operating system.

The full build string is 9600.16384.winblue_rtm.130821-1623, so the Softies might actually continue work on Windows 8.1 even if they send the final version to OEMs in RTM form.

There's no official statement on this, so we're still waiting for Microsoft to publicly announce the release of Windows 8.1 RTM, but if everything goes right, expect more details on the stable build sometime next week.
