Microsoft continues efforts to move Windows XP users to a newer platform, with the Softies now claiming that the imminent launch of Windows 8.1 boosting the number of those who upgrade.

Microsoft's Vice President of Marketing Tami Reller said during the Intel Developer Forum 2013 that three quarters of Windows enterprises had moved or were moving to modern desktops, which does nothing more than to cut Windows XP’s share even more.

Figures provided by market researcher Net Applications revealed a 4 percent drop in market share for Windows XP, with the 11-year-old OS now powering approximately 33 percent of computers worldwide.

That could be only good news for Microsoft, as the tech giant is trying to kill two birds with one stone. First of all, Microsoft hopes to get users away from Windows XP, but the same time, it also hopes to boost Windows 8 sales by convincing more consumers to deploy it.
