Windows 8.1 Update 1 is now available for download, so more information on the controversial boot to desktop option has emerged.

Just as Windows leaker WZor notes, boot to desktop options appears to be turned on by default, but even though Microsoft refuses to comment on such a change, it turns out that the feature would be enabled only on new installations.

On the other hand, if you prefer to update from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Update 1 using the built-in Windows Update feature, your settings would remain unchanged, so in case boot to desktop isn’t turned on, you’ll still get to see the Start screen.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is scheduled to be unveiled in March on Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday rollout and it’s expected to be shipped via Windows Update as a free download for all those already running Windows 8.1.
