The leaked copy of Windows 8.1 Update 1 is showing several improvements to Microsoft’s modern platform, including enhancements made to the desktop supposed to better mix with the controversial Metro UI.

As you can see in these screenshots, Metro apps can now be pinned to the taskbar in an effort that’s clearly meant to give the Modern UI another chance by making these programs a bit more helpful for desktop users.

According to some previous reports, Microsoft could also make boot to desktop a default setting for new installations, while also those who update using the built-in features would stick to their standard configurations.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is expected to be launched in March as part of Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday rollout and will be offered free of charge to those already running Windows 8.1.
