The 8.1 OS update is just around the corner, but the core Windows 8 operating system still fails to impress, as its market share remained fairly low in September.

According to statistics provided by market researcher StatCounter, Windows 8 is currently the third top platform in the world, with a share of 7.46 percent.

Just as expected, Windows 7 continues to lead the charts with an overwhelming 51.98 percent, followed by the never-dying Windows XP with 20.59 percent.

Of course, all eyes are now on the upcoming Windows 8.1, as Microsoft hopes the update to finally give its modern operating system a chance to succeed. 8.1 tackles several issues spotted in the original OS version and brings back the Start button, while also implementing options to skip the Start screen and boot directly to desktop.
