As you may find out by simply reading its name, Windows 8 Codecs is a codec pack specifically aimed at adopters of Microsoft’s new OS, promising to make any multimedia file playable on their device.

A new version of the codec collection released today brings improvements for the built-in components, so some of the previously-reported issues should no longer exist in this build.

Windows 8 Codecs 1.5.7 updates LAV filters to version 57, Icaros to 222b1, and MediaINFO to 63, according to the official release notes.

Windows 8 Codecs can be installed on basically any desktop version of Microsoft’s new operating system, as it offers support for both 32- and 64-bit versions.

Even though the standard settings should be just fine for all Windows 8 users, the codec pack integrates a long list of settings, but at least average computer knowledge is needed to tweak configuration files.
