Microsoft equipped Windows 8 with quite a helpful pack of apps, including calendars and email solutions, to make the most of your Metro UI.

A download manager, on the other hand, was missing from Microsoft’s new OS, so all our attention has been focused on the Windows Store for third-party apps.

File Download is one of the tools that can provide you with the essential features to easily add and manage downloads, including HTTP and FTP links. Password protected websites are also supported, while the background mode allows you to continue downloading without keeping the app always on top.

The only setback is that you need to manually add new download links, but future versions might come with dedicated options to automatically retrieve them from the default browser.

The current version works on basically all versions of Windows 8, so you can install it on both desktops and tablet devices running Windows RT.
